Salted Caramel Candied Bacon, Lettuce, Tomato & Cheese Sandwich

Variety is the spice of life.  The saying is more than just a saying; collecting and trying new recipes means we experience a variety of meals using different proteins.  Don’t get me wrong, we have tried and true favorites that I still make and enjoy, but the back-and-forth issue of deciding what to have for dinner becomes a moot point.

Making out a menu and incorporating recipes I want to try with the foods that we have in-house practically eradicates wastefulness in tossing out expired foods.   And the benefit of having new meals is refreshing and something we look forward to.

Ingredients:

  • 4 slices bacon
  • 1 Tablespoon Ole Smoky Salty Caramel Whiskey
  • 1 ½ teaspoons brown sugar
  • 4 slices Sourdough French bread
  • 4 slices ripe tomato
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • Mayonnaise
  • 2 slices cheese (sharp cheddar, white cheddar, or Gouda)
  • Iceberg lettuce leaves

Directions:

Cook bacon over medium heat until almost done.  Brush one side of each strip with the Salted Caramel Whiskey and then sprinkle the brown sugar evenly over each strip.  Finish cooking bacon until crisp.  Drain on a paper towel.

While bacon is cooking, salt and pepper the tomato slices.

Toast the sourdough French bread slices in your toaster.

To assemble the sandwiches, spread mayonnaise on one side of each of the four bread slices after toasting.  Arrange the tomato slices on top of two of the slices of toast, add the cheese, 2 strips of bacon each, and then the iceberg lettuce.  Top with the second piece of toast, mayonnaise side down.  Slice the sandwiches in half and enjoy.

You’ll find the caramel whiskey brings out more flavor to the bacon and the brown sugar adds just a touch of sweetness.  The sourdough French bread adds tang and meatiness to the meal while the tomatoes bring a fresh fruity flavor ending with the crispness of the lettuce.

Serve with coleslaw, potato salad, or watermelon for a satisfying summer meal!
