When planning a trip to the enchanting Amalfi Coast, many travelers are drawn to the allure of popular towns like Amalfi and Positano. However, along the coast, lies a hidden gem waiting to be discovered: Minori.

Nestled on the stunning coastline of southern Italy, Minori offers an authentic experience that sets it apart from its more renowned neighbors. From its friendly locals, charming ambiance, and affordable amenities, Minori should be your preferred base when exploring the Amalfi Coast.

Escape the Tourist Hordes

One of the most compelling reasons to choose Minori over Amalfi or Positano is its lesser-known status. While those towns attract a plethora of tourists year-round, Minori retains tranquility and charm. Fewer crowds mean you can more easily immerse yourself in the local culture while savoring the beauty of the Amalfi Coast. Here you can experience the joy of wandering through narrow streets, exchanging smiles with friendly locals, and discovering hidden corners untouched by the masses.

Minori's locals are renowned for their warm and welcoming nature. During your stay, you'll likely form genuine connections with the residents, making your time in Minori even more memorable. As you stroll into town each day, you may find yourself exchanging greetings with familiar faces, as I did, creating a sense of belonging in this picturesque coastal community.

Another surprise awaits those who choose Minori: its affordability. Compared to its more famous counterparts, Minori offers a budget-friendly alternative for accommodations, shopping, and dining. The shops and restaurants here provide excellent value for money, allowing you to indulge in delectable cuisine and souvenirs without breaking the bank. This means you can spend more on experiences, such as excursions and other activities that reveal the best of the Amalfi Coast.

Activities in Minori and Beyond

While Minori's laid-back atmosphere may be its most appealing aspect, the town is also a gateway to a multitude of captivating activities in the region. Here are some recommendations to make the most of your stay.

Making paper the old fashioned way.

Hiking the steps from Minori to Ravello.

  1. Ravello: Embark on an invigorating adventure by ascending the 1,200 steps to Ravello, a charming village perched on a hilltop. Alternatively, take a less-strenuous bus or taxi ride to this idyllic destination, where you can enjoy an espresso in Ravello's lively square and explore the exquisite Villa Cimbrone gardens.

  2. Coastal Ferry Tours: Hop on a ferry from Minori to explore the neighboring towns along the coast. Make a stop in Amalfi to admire its breathtaking cathedral, followed by a tour of the nearby Amalfi Paper Museum, where you can try your hand at making traditional paper. Afterward, relish a delicious lunch in nearby Atrani at A Paranza, a hidden gem loved by locals.

  3. Explore by Boat: For a truly unforgettable experience, rent a boat and skipper for the day to cruise along the coast. Discover secluded coves, pristine beaches, and enchanting sea caves. Have the skipper drop you off for a leisurely lunch at a picturesque spot where you can revel in the sheer beauty of the Amalfi Coast. Note: We booked our boat excursion through Viator/Tripadvisor, and our skipper, Angelo, picked us up at the pier in Minori.

  4. Private Chef Experience: Elevate your culinary journey by hiring a private chef to cook for you. Claudia Rocco and her chef husband are highly recommended for their expertise and passion for creating customized menus with delectable dishes. Reach out to Claudia at claudia_ruocco@hotmail.it.

Indulge in Campania’s Wine Treasures

For wine enthusiasts, the Campania region boasts exceptional wines that pair perfectly with the local cuisine. Campania's winemaking tradition dates back thousands of years, and its volcanic soils produce wines of outstanding character.

Campania's white wines are particularly noteworthy, as they exhibit vibrant acidity, complex aromatics, and a distinct minerality, making them an ideal pairing for the local seafood delicacies. Whether you're enjoying a plate of fresh anchovies, succulent grilled octopus, or a classic seafood pasta dish, these white wines will enhance the flavors of the cuisine.

At the table, be sure to keep an eye out for renowned producers that have gained recognition both locally and internationally. Better yet, hire a driver to take you to a winery or two for an unforgettable afternoon in the vineyards. Make sure to reach out to the wineries beforehand, as many are by appointment only.

  • Marisa Cuomo, known for the iconic Furore Bianco Fiorduva, crafts elegant and expressive wines that showcase the region's unique terroir.

  • San Salvatore, located in the lush countryside of Irpinia, focuses on organic and biodynamic practices, producing remarkable whites such as Fiano and Greco di Tufo.

  • Tenuta San Francesco, situated in the foothills of Mount Vesuvius, offers a range of delicious white wines, including the renowned Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio.

  • Ettore Sammarco, a small family-run winery in the hills of Avellino, produces notable whites made from Greco di Tufo and Fiano di Avellino.

  • Feudi di San Gregorio, one of the largest wineries in the area, offers a diverse range of Campania wines, including lively whites, bold reds, and a delightfully dry rosé.

A Home Away from Home

To make the most of your stay in Minori, consider renting a villa through platforms like Airbnb or VRBO. Our personal experience with Amalfi Vacations was exceptional, as our host, Vincenzo, went above and beyond. Upon our arrival, he graciously showed us around the property, handpicking zucchini, eggplants, lemons, and basil along the way, which added a touch of authenticity to our stay.
