What are Pigs in a Blanket Anyway?
A Pig in a Blanket is a sausage, typically mini cocktail sausages (like Hillshire Farm Lil’ Smokies) as the “pig” wrapped in either a pancake, biscuit dough, or a crescent-style piece of pastry as the “blanket”. They are super easy to put together and everyone loves them.
Let’s Answer a Few FAQ’s
Can I use hot dogs or other types of sausages?
Yes! You can use regular hot dogs for pigs in a blanket. Just cut your hot dogs into quarters and proceed with the recipe as is. You can even use different types of sausage! Try a spicy andouille or an herby chicken sausage, just make sure you’re buying them precooked.
What can I use instead of crescent dough?
Crescent roll dough is the classic dough to use for this recipe. The flaky, buttery flavor can’t be matched, so we tend to gravitate towards it, but using a puff pastry or even biscuit dough would work in this recipe. If you’re using puff pastry, make sure to allow enough time for it to thaw since you typically find it in the frozen section at the grocery store.
How many Pigs in a Blanket does this recipe make?
This recipe makes 24 pigs in a blanket total. Please note that you may have a few mini sausages left over. Perfect little snack reward for the cook!
How to Make Pigs in a Blanket
Just 2 main ingredients needed to make these little gems – the pigs and the blanket – everything else is optional! For full recipe details, including measurements and ingredients needed, see the printable recipe card down below.
Preheat Oven + Prep Baking Sheet
Preheat oven. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Set aside.
Roll Out Dough + Cut Triangles
Roll out each crescent roll triangle onto a cutting board. Make your cut along the perforated dotted lines first, and then cut 2 more triangles, creating three triangles. This is super easy to do using a pizza slicer. See the first picture below.
If using dijon mustard or cheese, spread either one on the pastry before you begin rolling. Place each mini sausage onto the larger end of each crescent roll triangle.
Roll up Crescents + Bake
Roll the crescent starting at the larger end and into smaller end. Transfer to baking sheet. Melt about 2 tablespoons of butter and brush onto crescents and sprinkle the tops with salt (both completely optional).
Bake for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown.
For a Fun Twist
If you’re wanting to take these to the next level, try adding a sprinkling of Everything Bagel Seasoning on top of them before baking.
