Shopping at HomeGoods

I ran into my local HomeGoods store the other day on a mission to find one thing . . . and came out with a few, um…totally unplanned things. I couldn't find what I originally went in the store looking for, so I got a bit sidetracked by all the red CLEARANCE stickers around the store (anyone else ever do that?? ).
I was mesmerized by all the FUN clearance finds and thought I'd share some of the goodies with you!

But FIRST…did you know that HomeGoods.com will be launching later this year? Yep – that's right! According to a press release last November (you can read it here), the popular retailer will be bringing many of their fun home finds online so you can shop from the comfort of your own sofa.
Right now, their website doesn't offer any shoppable merchandise, but you can get inspiration, find a HomeGoods store near you, read their blog, or check out their social media platforms. The new online store is likely to offer a similar selection of decorative accessories, accent furniture, tableware, seasonal items, storage solutions, and more goodies that you can typically find in stores. 😀 I cannot wait!
Now for some fun HomeGoods clearance finds…and what I actually bought!
*Note that clearance will vary by location, but it's definitely worth checking! Also, be sure to browse ALL the shelves throughout the store looking for those red stickers – not just the designated clearance shelves.
Aqua Blue & White Floral Embroidered Throw Pillow – $15 (reg. $19.99)
*This pillow has a Pottery Barn vibe and the stitching looks similar to this $75 pillow cover (yikes!) ~ or even this pillow that goes for $30 at Kirkland's, but is currently sold out.
Square Stoneware Baking Dish – $4 (reg. $5.99)
*Most of the ones I found had minor imperfections. However, a similar dish sells for almost $50 on Amazon ~ WOWZA!
White Serving Dish – $8 (reg. $9.99) – this one had no imperfections at all and I loved that it's dishwasher, microwave, and oven safe!
Jordan's Skinny Syrups, Mocha – $3 (reg. $3.99) – they had other flavors for just $3.99 too!
*This same flavor syrup is currently selling for over $9 on Amazon ~ WOW!
Mikasa Set of 4 Bone China Ciara Cereal Bowls – $8 (reg. $12.99)
*If you find these and need them, grab them ~ a set of 4 Mikasa bowls sell for $27-$40 at Macy's!

*These types of storage pieces sell for over $100 at Target and other stores!

Square “Be the Reason” Wall Sign – $10 (reg. $12.99) – this one was really high quality!
And I LOVE all the fun mugs! (While I didn't find any on clearance, almost all of them were just $3.99!)
SO, what did I leave HomeGoods with?
I could have bought the entire store…seriously. 😀 But because I didn't find what I originally went in for and didn't really “need anything”, I gave myself a $15 budget. (I was SO excited to see what bargains I could find!)
SO, I snagged the $3 Jordan's Skinny Syrup in Mocha, the $8 serving platter (I figured I could use it for serving rolls, chicken, salad…anything!), and a fun $3.99 mug that I just couldn't pass up. 🙂
Overall, I spent just $14.99 plus tax for items that would have cost well over $30 anywhere else. I was pretty happy with my finds and for staying within my budget (see tip #2 below for more on that)! 🙂

Tips for Shopping at HomeGoods
If you've been reading PPP long at all you know I absolutely love pretty things for my home, but so hate paying full price! HomeGoods is usually my second stop when decorating a space in our home, and I could spend hours meandering their aisles.
If you're looking to shop HomeGoods there are a few things to look for while you're there ~ here's what you'll want to watch for . . .
1. Check out your local thrift store or Goodwill first.
While I've found a ton of fun deals at HomeGoods, I always like to check Goodwill and local thrift stores for basic furnishings (chairs, tables, glassware, etc.) before heading to HomeGoods. My favorite $2 chair came from Goodwill and just needed a coat of paint!
You can really save a bundle if you can find the right piece at your local Goodwill. When you're looking, watch for the size and shape of an item (especially on tables and chairs), and think about whether you can save something extra by just slapping on some paint.
2. Do NOT step foot into HomeGoods without a planned budget in place.
Guys, I love HomeGoods. Love. it. But you can so easily fall in love with every single item in the store (and so much of it is priced incredibly reasonably!), so you've got to go in with a budget in place. Know what pieces you're looking for, and before making a purchase be sure you absolutely love it so you don't overspend on things you don't need.
Note: HomeGoods return policy is a full return within 30 days with a receipt and after 30 days you'll get a store credit even if you still have your receipt.
3. Beware of the HomeGoods/TJMaxx credit card.
Honestly guys, we've made it a policy in our home that we just don't do store credit cards. We do have a credit card that we use to earn air miles which gets paid off every month, but that's because in twenty years we've never ever (never) carried a balance.
When you get to the checkout lane, it is oh-so-tempting to enjoy that extra 10% off by opening a store credit card. However, if you don't have money to pay for what's in your buggy, go put everything back (I promise you'll thank me one day!) 😉
Okay, now to the fun stuff! 🙂
4. Watch HomeGoods for awesome seasonal decor.
HomeGoods has such cute seasonal decor, and if you can wait until the end of the season you'll save even more! The best time to buy is after the season is over and then stash it away for next year.
I found this wreath that I'd been eyeing for ages for just $29 at HomeGoods. The same wreath was priced at $89 (eek!) at a local boutique store, so I was thrilled with my fun little deal!
5. HomeGoods has amazing prices on glassware.
If you're looking for inexpensive way to decorate, you can't beat prices on glassware. Check your local thrift store first (and even the Dollar Tree for smaller items). But if you're looking for a piece to make a big statement on a penny pinched budget, the glassware section at HomeGoods is a great place to start. (Just make sure you don't have small kids nearby ~ eek!)
6. Check out small end tables at HomeGoods.
Ya'll…HomeGoods has great fun and funky end tables priced for way under $100 ~ there's no reason to pay more for these at a high end furniture store! Plus, many of them go on clearance from time to time ~ and be sure to check them over for any dings or scratches and ask for a discount (more on that below).
7. Don't miss the furniture section at HomeGoods, and check back often.
HomeGoods has amazing furniture priced for a fraction of what a high end furniture store would cost. However, their selection rotates fast, so what you see today won't likely be there tomorrow. If you find something you love and need, grab it fast!
A friend of mine recommended a chaise for my office when I was re-doing it, and found the one pictured above for $900 at a local design store. WOWZA ~ that is nuts.
She then suggested watching HomeGoods for one before paying that much. Sure enough I walked into HomeGoods several times and didn't see anything for several weeks, until I walked in one more time on a whim and found the chaise above.
It was $399 (half the cost of the designer store brand), and I absolutely fell in love with it – in fact I like it even more than the higher end brand. (The desk and lamp are from HomeGoods as well ~ see closeup pictures of my office makeover over HERE.)
8. You can instantly change a worn out couch by checking the pillow aisle.
While my first option for updating pillows are definitely the pillow covers at Hobby Lobby, HomeGoods has a huge selection of pillows that you don't want to miss. I like to look at the ones grouped together in twos first to get the most bang for my buck.
9. If you need a basket, HomeGoods is the place to shop!
I absolutely love the selection of baskets at HomeGoods! While TJMaxx and Marshall's carry some as well, the selection at HomeGoods is just so much larger and worth a trip if you have one nearby.
10. Watch HomeGoods for their HUGE selection of dishes.
If you're looking for unique dishes (or just less expensive dishes), check out HomeGoods. We have a basic set of plain white dishes from Target for our every day meals, and since they're white it's easy to find an extra piece or two to coordinate from HomeGoods for just a few dollars.
11. HomeGoods has very reasonable prices on high end bedding.
If you're looking for quality bedding sets, make sure to see what HomeGoods has in stock. These change all the time, so if you don't see one that's right on the first trip, be patient and wait a few weeks for them to re-stock.
Check out this guest bedroom makeover on a penny pinched budget ~ the bedding is from HomeGoods, everything else is from Goodwill, yard sales, or re-purposed decor we already had in our basement.
I usually stick to bedding at HomeGoods, so I can fluff it up by changing out the pillows. They usually have a large selection of white bedding, and you can easily shop their pillow aisle to turn it into the look you want.
12. HomeGoods has a huge selection of rugs, but you may have to muddle through them when you're there.
If you're looking for a new rug (either a small floor rug or large area rug), you can find a huge selection at HomeGoods. You may have to dig a bit to find one that works for you, but the prices are so much less than designer stores and are usually quality rugs!
13. Also swing by HomeGoods for shower curtains and wall decor.
When my kids were little, I fluffed up my kids bathroom by adding a new shower curtain, wall decor, trash can, bath towels, and a few other things. I paid under $44 for everything and it turned out amazing!
14. You can find great deals on the food aisles.
If you're looking to score some nice savings on unique coffees, syrups, or other gourmet foods, be sure to check the food aisle! It's often a misconception that the food items are either expired, but usually they're just bulk items from gourmet stores. I've found great deals on K-Cups, coffee syrups, and more!
15. Don't miss the clearance section at HomeGoods.
You never know what may show up in the clearance section at HomeGoods, so be sure to take a peek when you're there. Also, be willing to dig as some of the best finds may be under a few piles of other items. And, be sure to check for red clearance tags around the store – not just the designated clearance aisles!
16. Don't be afraid to ask for a discount.
If you notice an item at HomeGoods is slightly damaged but you still would like it, ask for a discount. They may be able to discount your price, and it never hurts to nicely ask!
17. Know that HomeGoods selection varies a lot by store.
There are some great HomeGoods stores and some not-so-great stores. I haven't figured out any rhyme or reason to it, but if you don't find something you're looking for at your regular store and have another one in your town it may be worth making a trip to check it out.
All stores items vary so much every week as they get new trucks in, so don't give up if you don't find the thing you're looking for on your first trip. I'd love to hear what your favorite HomeGoods find has been ~ leave a comment to share!
